Electric Vehicle Servicing Leighton Buzzard

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular, it’s important to understand EV car servicing. Electric cars, unlike their traditional petrol and diesel counterparts, have less compounds and lower maintenance needs–primarily an electric motor and battery. Although EVs don’t have an internal combustion engine (ICE), they still require regular servicing to ensure they operate at peak performance and so all components that experience wear and tear, such as brakes, tyres and shock absorbs, are in good working condition.

At Jackson & Phillips we have the training and technical knowledge to service and maintain any make or model of electric car or vehicle. Our electric vehicle servicing checks are tailored to the unique needs of electric cars so that your vehicle remains in working order.

Servicing your EV regularly is important to ensure long life and reliability, it also serves as an early warning to any work which may be needed before the next service / MOT is due.

What Does EV Servicing Cover?

EV servicing typically includes checking the following components:

  • Engine motor(s) and batteries
  • Coolant and brake fluid
  • Tire pressure, tread, and depth
  • Regenerative braking system
  • Suspension
  • High voltage charging ports and cables

However, the frequency of servicing can vary depending on the manufacturer's specifications and how the EV is driven. For example, drivers who frequently take long trips or drive in extreme weather conditions may want to opt for a 6-monthly interim service.

Why is EV Servicing Important?

Regular servicing is important for electric vehicles (EVs) because it helps ensure the car’s safety, performance, and longevity:

Safety: Servicing can help identify potential issues before they become major problems, which can lead to costly repairs and make the car unsafe to drive.

Performance: Servicing helps keep the battery and electrical systems working efficiently, which is important for maintaining the car’s range.

Longevity: Servicing can help EVs retain their value over time and ensure compliance with manufacturer-recommended service schedules, which can be required to keep warranties valid.

Electric Vehicle Servicing

What's the difference between regular servicing and EV servicing?

Whilst electric vehicles require fewer parts and fluid changes, regular servicing is still essential to avoid expensive repairs down the road.

There are some differences in servicing electric cars compared to diesel and petrol cars. Electric vehicles have different wear rates when it comes to key components, e.g. using regenerative braking, which is more efficient and reduces wear and tear on the brakes–potentially helping to lower maintenance costs. However, because the brakes are used less, it can also mean they get wet and corrode quicker.

Your electric car also has different maintenance needs compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. For example, there’s no need for an engine oil change, but additional checks on filters and cooling systems are needed to ensure the electric vehicle operates efficiently.

EV Maintenance & Parts

At Jackson & Phillips our highly trained vehicle technicians can help you with more than just electric car servicing. We can support you with anything from tyres and brakes to air conditioning and MOT tests.

Just like petrol and diesel cars, your electric car will still need its annual MOT test, which our accredited MOT testers can efficiently carry out.

How long does an electric car service take?

An electric vehicle service can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the type of service and condition of the car.

Do electric cars still need servicing?

Yes, just like petrol and diesel cars, your electric vehicle still needs regular servicing. Even though there are fewer components to check, they are still subject to wear and tear. Regular car maintenance is still essential. Try and stick to a regular service schedule just as you would with a petrol or diesel car. Most manufacturers will provide recommended service plans in your handbook.

How often should your electric cars be serviced?

Best practice is to get your electric car serviced as often as your petrol or diesel car, e.g. if you booked a service with your yearly MOT test, it’s still worth doing the same to ensure your electric vehicle is in good working condition. Components such as tyre wear, wiper blades, brake pads, brake fluid change (where applicable) and more, need to be maintained.

Can my local garage service electric cars?

Electric car servicing requires highly trained technicians to carry out the checks correctly. Our technicians have all been trained and are IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) certified. Regular garages are likely not going to be able to carry out electric vehicle servicing, unless directly specified.
